Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about adding voice control to your Loxone smart home
Getting Started
Learn the basics about LoxVoice
What is LoxVoice and how does it work?
LoxVoice is a cloud-based service that connects your Loxone Miniserver to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
Here's how it works:
- Secure Cloud Connection: LoxVoice creates an encrypted connection between your Loxone Miniserver and our cloud servers
- Voice Assistant Integration: Our service translates voice commands from Alexa or Google Assistant into commands your Loxone system understands
- Natural Language Processing: You can use intuitive commands like "close the blinds" instead of awkward phrases like "turn on the blinds"
- Real-time Control: Commands are executed instantly with sub-second response times
Unlike DIY solutions that require hardware like Raspberry Pi and complex port forwarding, LoxVoice works entirely in the cloud. This means setup takes just 5 minutes with no technical knowledge required.

Setup & Installation
Getting LoxVoice up and running
How long does LoxVoice setup take?
LoxVoice setup takes approximately 5 minutes from creating your account to issuing your first voice command.
The 3-Step Process:
- Create Account (1 minute): Sign up at app.loxvoice.com with your email
- Connect Miniserver (2 minutes): Enter your Miniserver IP, username, and password
- Link Voice Assistant (2 minutes): Enable LoxVoice skill in Alexa or Google Home app
Compare this to:
- 1Home: 2-4 hours (hardware setup, network configuration)
- DIY Home Assistant: 8-20 hours (installation, configuration, testing)
Watch our setup guide: How LoxVoice Works
Do I need any hardware or additional equipment?
No additional hardware required! LoxVoice is completely cloud-based.
What you need (you already have):
- Loxone Miniserver: Gen 1 or Gen 2 (any version)
- Internet Connection: For your Miniserver
- Voice Assistant Device: Amazon Echo, Google Home, or smartphone with Alexa/Google Assistant
What you DON'T need:
- ❌ Raspberry Pi or server hardware
- ❌ 1Home hardware device ($1,119)
- ❌ Additional computer or always-on device
- ❌ Special cables or network equipment
- ❌ Technical expertise or programming knowledge
Do I need to configure port forwarding or change network settings?
No port forwarding or network configuration required. This is one of the biggest advantages of LoxVoice's cloud-based approach.
LoxVoice Setup:
- ✅ No port forwarding needed
- ✅ No firewall changes
- ✅ No static IP required
- ✅ No VPN configuration
- ✅ No router settings to change
How It Works:
LoxVoice uses your existing Loxone cloud connection (the same one your Loxone app uses). We create a secure, encrypted connection through Loxone's servers, so no direct access to your home network is needed.
Requirements:
- Your Miniserver must be reachable via the internet (most are by default)
- You need your Miniserver username and password
- That's it!
View our simple guide on finding your Loxone DNS Address:
Can I set up LoxVoice myself or do I need an installer?
You can absolutely set up LoxVoice yourself in just 5 minutes. No technical knowledge or installer required.
The setup process is designed to be so simple that if you can:
- Use the Loxone smartphone app
- Enable a skill in the Alexa or Google Home app
...then you can set up LoxVoice yourself.
Support Available:
- Setup Guides: Step-by-step instructions with screenshots
- Video Tutorials: Watch the entire setup process
- UK Support Team: Email or chat if you get stuck
- Installer Assistance: If you prefer, your Loxone installer can set it up in minutes
What information do I need from my Loxone system?
You'll need basic information that you likely already have:
- Miniserver Address:
- Your Miniserver's cloud DNS address (e.g., https://dns.loxonecloud.com/SERIAL)
- OR your Miniserver's public IP address and port (e.g., 123.123.123.123:80)
- Username: Your Miniserver username (not your Loxone app username)
- Password: Your Miniserver password
- Find your DNS Address from your Loxone app (guide below)
- Check the documentation from your Loxone installer
- Look in the Loxone Config software
- Contact your installer - they should have this information
Finding your Loxone Cloud DNS Address:
What LoxVoice Does:
Once connected, LoxVoice automatically reads your Loxone configuration and makes all your devices available for voice control. You don't need to manually configure individual lights, blinds, or scenes.
Security: Your credentials are encrypted and stored securely. We only use them to establish the connection to your Miniserver.

Does LoxVoice support Apple HomeKit or Siri?
Apple HomeKit/Siri is not currently supported by LoxVoice.
Why Not?
Apple's HomeKit requires hardware certification and uses different protocols than Alexa and Google Assistant. Implementing HomeKit support would require significant changes to LoxVoice's cloud-only architecture.
Current Options for Apple Users:
- Use Alexa or Google: You can use the Alexa or Google Assistant app on your iPhone/iPad
- 1Home Pro: Offers HomeKit support but requires expensive hardware ($1,119+)
- DIY Homebridge: Advanced technical solution requiring Raspberry Pi and extensive configuration
Future Plans:
We're monitoring Apple's HomeKit developments and Matter protocol. If Apple simplifies HomeKit integration or fully embraces Matter, we'll evaluate adding support.
Which Loxone Miniservers are compatible?
LoxVoice works with all Loxone Miniserver generations:
- ✅ Miniserver Gen 1 (original green box)
- ✅ Miniserver Gen 2 (current model)
- ✅ Miniserver Go Gen 1
- ✅ Miniserver Go Gen 2
- ✅ All firmware versions (we recommend keeping updated)
Requirements:
- Miniserver must be accessible via internet (most are by default)
- Running any recent firmware version
- Connected to your network with working internet
Not Compatible:
- ❌ Loxone Music Server (unless paired with a Miniserver)
- ❌ Standalone Loxone extensions without a Miniserver

Can I control KNX devices through Loxone?
Yes, if your KNX devices are integrated into your Loxone configuration.
How It Works:
Loxone Miniservers have built-in KNX support via the Loxone KNX Extension. Any KNX devices you've configured in Loxone Config will automatically be available through LoxVoice.
Example Setup:
- Your KNX lights are integrated into Loxone via KNX Extension
- They appear in your Loxone app as "Office Lights"
- LoxVoice automatically makes them available for voice control
- You say "Alexa, turn on office lights" - it works!
What You Can Control:
- KNX lighting actuators
- KNX blind/shutter actuators
- KNX heating/cooling controls
- KNX dimming actuators
- Any KNX device integrated into Loxone
Alternative for Pure KNX:
If you need direct KNX integration without Loxone, consider 1Home which offers dedicated KNX support.
Voice Commands
Using natural language with LoxVoice
Why do I have to say "turn on" to close my blinds with other solutions?
You don't with LoxVoice! This is one of our biggest advantages.
The Problem with Other Solutions:
Many DIY solutions and some commercial products treat blinds as simple on/off switches. This leads to confusing commands like:
- ❌ "Alexa, turn ON the bedroom blinds" (to close them)
- ❌ "Alexa, turn OFF the bedroom blinds" (to open them)
LoxVoice Natural Commands:
- ✅ "Alexa, CLOSE the bedroom blinds"
- ✅ "Alexa, OPEN the bedroom blinds"
- ✅ "Hey Google, set the blinds to 50%"
- ✅ "Hey Google, raise the living room shades"
More Natural Command Examples:
- "Close the blinds" - Actually closes them (not "turns them on")
- "Dim the lights to 25%" - Sets lights to 25% brightness
- "Set bedroom to 20 degrees" - Adjusts thermostat
- "Are any windows open?" - Natural status query
This intuitive approach means less frustration and faster adoption by your whole family, including children and elderly family members who find awkward commands confusing.
What voice commands can I use?
LoxVoice supports a wide range of natural voice commands. Here are common examples:
Lighting Commands:
- "Alexa, turn on the living room lights"
- "Hey Google, turn off the bedroom light"
- "Alexa, dim the kitchen lights"
- "Hey Google, set the dining room to 50%"
- "Alexa, brighten the hallway lights"
Blind/Shade Commands:
- "Alexa, close the bedroom blinds"
- "Hey Google, open all the blinds"
- "Alexa, set the office blinds to 30%"
- "Hey Google, raise the living room shades"
- "Alexa, stop the kitchen blinds"
Climate Control:
- "Alexa, set the bedroom to 21 degrees"
- "Hey Google, what's the temperature in the living room?"
- "Alexa, increase the heating in the office"
- "Hey Google, set the thermostat to 20"
Scene Activation:
- "Alexa, activate movie mode"
- "Hey Google, good night"
- "Alexa, turn on evening scene"
- "Hey Google, activate work from home"
Status Queries:
- "Alexa, are any lights on?"
- "Hey Google, are the garage doors closed?"
- "Alexa, what's the temperature outside?"
- "Hey Google, is the front door locked?"

Can I create custom voice commands or routines?
Yes! You can create powerful custom routines using Alexa Routines or Google Home Routines.
What Are Routines?
Routines let you trigger multiple LoxVoice actions with a single custom voice command or schedule them to run automatically.
Example Routines:
1. "Good Morning" Routine:
- Open bedroom blinds to 60%
- Turn on bathroom lights to 100%
- Set thermostat to 21°C
- Turn on kitchen lights
- Play news briefing
2. "Movie Time" Routine:
- Close living room blinds
- Dim lights to 10%
- Activate Loxone cinema scene
3. "Leaving Home" Routine:
- Turn off all lights
- Set thermostat to away mode
- Close all blinds
- Activate Loxone security mode
How to Create Routines:
- Open Alexa or Google Home app
- Go to Routines section
- Create a new routine
- Set your trigger (voice command or schedule)
- Add LoxVoice actions from your available devices
- Save and test!
This is incredibly powerful for creating complex home automation without any programming!

Common Issues
Quick solutions to frequent problems
Alexa or Google says "device not responding" - what do I do?
This usually means the connection between LoxVoice and your Miniserver was interrupted. Here's how to fix it:
Quick Fixes (try these first):
- Check Your Internet: Make sure your Miniserver has internet connection
- Verify Miniserver is Running: Open your Loxone app - can you control devices?
- Restart LoxVoice Connection: Log into app.loxvoice.com and click "Reconnect Miniserver"
- Rediscover Devices: In Alexa or Google Home app, go to Devices and click "Discover"
Common Causes:
- Internet Outage: Your Miniserver lost internet connection
- Miniserver Reboot: Miniserver restarted and needs to reconnect
- Changed Password: You changed Miniserver password and need to update in LoxVoice
- IP Address Changed: If using local IP, it may have changed (use cloud DNS instead)
Still Not Working?
- Check LoxVoice status page for any service issues
- Unlink and relink the LoxVoice skill in Alexa/Google
- Contact our support team with your Miniserver serial number
For more solutions: Complete Troubleshooting Guide
Some devices show up but others don't - why?
This is usually due to device naming or Loxone configuration.
Common Reasons:
1. Device Not Marked as Favorite in Loxone Config:
- LoxVoice uses devices marked as "favorites" in Loxone Config
- Open Loxone Config, mark devices as favorites (star icon)
- Save and upload config to Miniserver
- Rediscover devices in LoxVoice dashboard
2. Device Names Too Complex:
- Very long device names may not sync properly
- Special characters can cause issues
- Try simplifying device names in Loxone Config
3. Unsupported Device Types:
- Some very specialized Loxone blocks aren't supported yet
- Music servers require special configuration
- Audio zones may need manual setup
Best Practices for Device Names:
- Keep names under 30 characters
- Use simple, clear names ("Living Room Lights" not "LR_Main_Ceiling_Spots_Group_1")
- Avoid special characters (! @ # $ % etc.)
- Include room names for clarity ("Bedroom Blinds" not just "Blinds")
Voice commands are slow or delayed - how can I fix this?
Voice commands should typically execute in under 2 seconds. If you're experiencing delays:
Check These Factors:
1. Internet Connection Speed:
- LoxVoice requires good internet on both ends
- Test your Miniserver's internet speed
- Check your home WiFi where voice assistant is located
- Minimum recommended: 5 Mbps upload/download
2. Miniserver Response:
- Is your Loxone app also slow?
- Miniserver may be overloaded with automation
- Check Miniserver statistics in Loxone Config
- Consider rebooting Miniserver if sluggish
3. Voice Assistant Location:
- Is your Alexa/Google device far from WiFi router?
- Weak WiFi signal causes delays
- Consider WiFi extender or moving device closer
4. Complex Commands:
- Commands affecting many devices take longer
- "Turn off all lights" processes multiple commands
- Individual device commands are always faster
- Simple Commands: 1-2 seconds (single light/blind)
- Scene Activation: 2-3 seconds
- Multiple Devices: 3-5 seconds ("turn off all lights")
- Status Queries: 2-4 seconds (requires response processing)
Can't connect my Miniserver during setup - what's wrong?
Connection issues during setup usually relate to incorrect credentials or network settings.
Checklist:
1. Verify Miniserver Details:
- IP Address/DNS: Is it correct? Try pinging from a computer
- Username: Use Miniserver username, not Loxone app username
- Password: Double-check for typos
- Port: Usually 80 for HTTP or 443 for HTTPS
2. Network Accessibility:
- Can you access your Miniserver from outside your home network?
- Try accessing via Loxone app on mobile data (not WiFi)
- If that doesn't work, your Miniserver isn't reachable externally
3. Firewall Issues:
- Some ISPs block certain ports
- Business internet may have strict firewall rules
- Check with your installer about firewall settings
Best Approach:
- Use your Miniserver's cloud DNS address (most reliable)
- Get the exact address from your installer
- Format: xxx.dyndns.loxonecloud.com
- This works from anywhere and never changes

Privacy & Security
Keeping your smart home secure
Is my Loxone data secure with LoxVoice?
Yes. LoxVoice uses bank-grade security to protect your data and connections.
Security Measures:
1. Encryption:
- Transit: All data encrypted in transit using TLS 1.3
- Storage: Credentials encrypted at rest using AES-256
- No Plain Text: We never store passwords in plain text
2. Minimal Data Storage:
- We only store what's necessary to provide the service
- Device states are not logged or retained
- No video, audio, or camera feeds are ever transmitted
- Your Loxone configuration never leaves your Miniserver
3. Access Controls:
- Your account is password protected
- We support two-factor authentication
- Session tokens expire after inactivity
- Account deletion removes all data
4. Compliance:
- GDPR compliant (UK/EU data protection)
- UK-based data centers
- Regular security audits
- Penetration testing
What We DON'T Do:
- ❌ We never sell your data
- ❌ We don't share data with advertisers
- ❌ We don't track your usage for marketing
- ❌ We don't listen to voice commands (Alexa/Google handle that)
Can LoxVoice access my cameras or personal data?
No. LoxVoice only interacts with control functions, not data or media.
What LoxVoice Can Access:
- Device names and types (lights, blinds, etc.)
- Current states (on/off, open/closed, temperature)
- Control commands you send via voice
What LoxVoice CANNOT Access:
- ❌ Camera feeds or recordings
- ❌ Intercom audio or video
- ❌ Door entry system images
- ❌ Security system logs
- ❌ Music server media files
- ❌ Your Loxone config program files
- ❌ Historical data or statistics
Voice Assistant Privacy:
- Alexa and Google process the voice commands, not us
- They only send LoxVoice the command intent ("turn on living room light")
- We never hear or store the actual voice recordings
- Manage voice recordings in your Alexa/Google account settings
What happens if LoxVoice servers go down?
Your Loxone system continues to work normally - you just can't use voice control temporarily.
What Still Works:
- ✅ Your Loxone app - all manual control
- ✅ Physical switches and controls
- ✅ All Loxone automation and logic
- ✅ Timers, sensors, and triggers
- ✅ Your entire smart home functions normally
What Doesn't Work:
- ❌ Voice commands through Alexa/Google
- ❌ Voice assistant routines involving Loxone
- Target: 99.9% uptime (less than 9 hours downtime per year)
- Monitoring: 24/7 automated monitoring
- Infrastructure: Redundant servers in multiple data centers
- Status: Check real-time status at status.loxvoice.com
Cloud Dependency Trade-off:
All cloud-based solutions (including LoxVoice, 1Home, and even Alexa/Google themselves) depend on internet connectivity. The trade-off is:
- Pro: Instant setup, no hardware, no maintenance
- Con: Requires internet and our servers to be working
For users who need 100% local control, DIY Home Assistant solutions may be more appropriate despite their complexity.
Do you comply with GDPR and UK data protection laws?
Yes, LoxVoice is fully GDPR compliant and follows UK data protection regulations.
Your Rights Under GDPR:
- Right to Access: Request a copy of your data anytime
- Right to Rectification: Correct any inaccurate data
- Right to Erasure: Delete your account and all data

Our Commitments:
- UK-based company subject to UK law
- Data stored in UK/EU data centers
- No data transfers to countries without adequate protection
- Data processing agreements in place
- Regular compliance audits
- Designated Data Protection Officer
Data Retention:
- Active accounts: Data retained while subscription active

- Billing records: Retained 7 years for tax compliance
- You can request immediate deletion

Technical Questions
For the tech-savvy users
How does LoxVoice connect to my Miniserver technically?
LoxVoice uses Loxone's WebSocket API over secure cloud connections.
Technical Architecture:
- Initial Connection: LoxVoice establishes a WebSocket connection to your Miniserver using the same method as the Loxone app
- Authentication: Uses HTTP Basic Authentication with your Miniserver credentials
- State Sync: Maintains persistent WebSocket connection for real-time state updates
- Command Execution: Sends control commands via WebSocket when you use voice
Connection Methods Supported:
- Cloud DNS: xxx.dyndns.loxonecloud.com (recommended)
- Local IP: Direct IP address when on same network
- Custom DNS: Your own domain pointing to Miniserver
Communication Flow:
- You speak: "Alexa, turn on kitchen lights"
- Alexa processes voice → sends intent to LoxVoice API
- LoxVoice translates intent → Loxone command
- LoxVoice sends command to Miniserver via WebSocket
- Miniserver executes command → sends confirmation
- LoxVoice confirms to Alexa → Alexa responds "OK"
- Total time: typically 1-2 seconds
Can I use LoxVoice with multiple Miniservers?
Yes, but each Miniserver requires a separate subscription currently.
Multiple Miniserver Scenarios:
1. Multiple Properties:
- You own a home and a vacation property, each with Loxone
- Set up separate LoxVoice account for each
- Use different Alexa/Google accounts or groups
- Cost: One subscription per Miniserver
2. Large Properties:
- Estate with main house and guest house (separate Miniservers)
- Each Miniserver needs its own LoxVoice subscription
- Devices from both can appear in same voice assistant
- Consider unique device names to avoid confusion
3. Rental Properties:
- Managing multiple rental properties with Loxone
- Contact us about bulk pricing for property managers
- Special rates available for 5+ properties
Technical Limitations:
- Each subscription supports one Miniserver
- Future: We're working on multi-Miniserver family plans
- Workaround: Use separate voice assistant groups per property
Does LoxVoice support Loxone's API changes and updates?
Yes, LoxVoice is actively maintained and updated for Loxone compatibility.
Our Update Process:
- We monitor all Loxone firmware releases
- Test compatibility before public firmware releases
- Update LoxVoice proactively for breaking changes
- All updates happen automatically on our servers
Your Responsibility:
- Keep your Miniserver firmware reasonably up-to-date
- Very old firmware (5+ years) may have compatibility issues
- Test LoxVoice after major Miniserver updates
- Report any issues immediately
Future Loxone Features:
- We plan to support Loxone Matter bridge when available
- New Loxone device types will be added as released
- Enhanced automation features as Loxone expands API
Can I integrate LoxVoice with other smart home systems?
LoxVoice focuses exclusively on Loxone, but voice assistants can control multiple systems.
Typical Integration Scenarios:
1. Loxone + Native Smart Devices:
- Your Loxone system via LoxVoice
- Philips Hue lights with native Alexa/Google integration
- Nest thermostat with Google Home
- Sonos speakers with Alexa
These all work together through your voice assistant!
2. Routines Combining Systems:
- Create Alexa routine: "Movie time"
- Closes Loxone blinds (via LoxVoice)
- Dims Hue lights to 10% (native integration)
- Starts Netflix on Fire TV (native integration)
3. What LoxVoice Doesn't Do:
- ❌ Direct KNX integration (use KNX through Loxone instead)
- ❌ Z-Wave/Zigbee devices (unless via Loxone)
- ❌ Other building automation systems
For Multi-System Integration:
If you need to integrate multiple building automation protocols, consider 1Home which supports KNX, Loxone, and other systems simultaneously.
